My Grandson

Our 1st grandson arrived and though everyone was talking about how big he was I was shocked at how tiny he seemed. I was extremely nervous about holding him but Holly seemed ok with it despite my clumsiness of late. I went immediately to a sitting position and just watched him laying there in my not so steady arms. I just kept thinking how lucky he is to be born into Holly and Joey's family. He is a cutie .. and he didn't cry on my watch which I am very thankful for.

Austin & Youth Conference

Austin went to youth conference this weekend, under protest. He had a great time though proving once again mom is always right. He showed us his new dance moves which he picked up while there. Chick-Fil-A's Cow Appreciation Day!

I love Chick-fil-a , the sandwiches are great but the cows are beginning to get on my nerves. Everywhere you look .. cows. On the road to work.. cows. Billboards .. cows. They can't even spell. Even worse they seem to be a bit more militant than usual. What exactly is their agenda?

Another thing why are they wearing party hats? Aren't they supposedly pleading for their very lives? What's up with that? And since when is it "cute" for one species to advocate the destruction of another? What kind of message is "Don't eat us, eat them" anyway. It's not the kind of thing I would teach my children.

I fear we have become pawns in their not so funny campaign. For mercy? Not a chance, this is a world dominance play if ever there was one. Now, we see that cows have not only cleverly enlisted the help of humans, they have tricked unsuspecting bi-peds into wearing "their" uniform. Dress up in cow from head to hoof, indeed! One of my very own daughters has succumbed to their clever entreaty. Wake up daughter before it is too late!
We are not fooled, we are not amused.

Cruel but hilarious. Patty as some of you know works at the Jr High, the same Jr High our son Taylor goes to every day. Well for some reason (not important to the story) Patty went to the very same classroom Taylor and his classmates are in. As She was leaving the classroom she heard some of the kids call out "I love you Mommy". Yes, everyone knew she was Taylor's mom, well they do now. I thought it was hilarious, I 'm still chuckling. How I Want To Be Remembered

We are gathered here, way far in the future, for the funeral of Jack Handey, the world’s oldest man. He died suddenly in bed, according to his wife, Miss France.

No one is really sure how old Jack was, but some think he may have been born as long ago as the twentieth century. He passed away after a long, courageous battle with honky-tonkin’ and alley-cattin’.

Even though Jack was incredibly old, he was amazingly healthy right up to the end. He attributed this to performing his funny cowboy dance for friends, relatives, and people waiting for buses. All agreed it was the most hilarious thing they had ever seen, and not at all stupid or annoying.

Jack’s death has thrown the whole world into mourning, and not in a fakey, sarcastic way. He was admired by people of all ages and stripes, and by all animals, including zebras. Even monsters liked him. He had his playful side and his serious side, but ninety-nine per cent of the time he had his “normal” side.

He started out life as a baby but worked his way up to an adult. But even when he was a full-grown adult he never forgot that he was a baby. His philosophy of life was a simple one. “I’m-a no look-a for trouble, because-a trouble, she’s-a no good,” he would often say, in his beloved fake Italian accent. He was quick with a laugh, but just as quick to point at what he was laughing at. Children loved him, but not in the way his teen-age niece claimed. He was always thinking of ways of helping people, and was wondering how he might do some of those things when he died.

Jack was an expert in so many fields, it’s hard to say what he was best at: the arts, the sciences, or the businesses. If you talked to him at a party, you couldn’t tell; he seemed to know it all. He has been compared to Captain James Cook, and not just because he was severely beaten by some Hawaiians, and to General Dwight D. Eisenhower, and not just because he liked to be driven around in a jeep.

As hard as it is to believe, he never sold a single painting during his lifetime, or even painted one. Some of the greatest advances in architecture, medicine, and theatre were not opposed by him, and he did little to sabotage them.

Although he lived in Paris, in a mansion famous for its many trapdoors, he was always proud to be an American. However, he was ashamed to be an earthling.

He was fabulously wealthy, but he would pretend to be broke, and often tried to borrow cigarettes and money from people. Little did they know that those who gave him stuff would later be rewarded in his will, with jewels and antigravity helmets. Women who refused to have sex with him are probably wishing that they could turn back the clock and say yes.

Generous even with his organs, he has asked that his eyes be donated to a blind person. Also his glasses. His skeleton, equipped with a spring that will suddenly propel it to a full standing position, will be used to educate kindergartners.

He has asked that no shrines be built to him. But he pointed out that this did not mean he didn’t like Shriners. According to our scientists, with their electronic soul trackers, Jack is in Heaven now. And not just regular Heaven, which any jerk can get into, but special secret Heaven, which even some angels don’t know about.

So let us celebrate his death, and not mourn. However, those who appear to be a little too happy will be asked to leave.

Perhaps the greatest tragedy is that a lot of the things Jack said and did seemed wrong at the time, but now we realize it wasn’t him; it was we who were wrong. Let us hope we don’t make the same mistake with his clones.

In closing, it is unfortunate that Jack’s friend Don could not be here. However, Don died many years ago, from a horrible fungus.

Austin Places 4th in State Mathematics Meet

Flour Bluff HS placed 4th overall at the Texas Math Science Coaches' Association (TMSCA) State Meet on March 15, 2008.

The team placed 3rd in Number Sense, 4th in Mathematics and Science, and 5th in Calculator. Individual results were as follows:

Anthony Pabillano - Top Gun award for 11th grade, 1st in Mathematics and Calculator, 2nd in Number Sense and 6th in Science;

Dylan Keyes - 2nd in 10th grade competition, 2nd in Mathematics, 4th in Science, 5th in Number Sense, and 9th in Calculator;

Austin Smith - 4th in 10th grade competition, 3rd in Number Sense, 5th in Mathematics and 6th in Calculator;

Brandon Earwood - 7th in Science;

Math Teams

Taylor attended his first Math Team competition for Flour Bluff following in his brother Austin's footsteps. He has been scoring very high on math tests and was invited to be on the math team recently. He did very well especially considering he has been on the team for a week or so with very little preparation. He contributed to the Flour Bluff team's 1st place finish on Saturday. Great job Taylor.
The math team coach Mr. Hay has a little initiation rite of passage for the new math team students. He tells them once they have arrived at the competition site that they will be required to debate in front of 300 people. Austin remembers his first competition and how nervous he was after Mr. Hay had told him the same thing. Of course there was no debate. Taylor was so nervous just thinking about having to stand up and debate he called Austin from the competition and asked him about it. Austin didn't let him off the hook though, a typical brother. Taylor eventually figured it out and now he knows what everyone else on the team knew that Mr. Hay has an odd sense of humor and it's a math team not a debate team.

Austin also had a Math team competition today. Austin won several trophies and awards at the latest Math UIL preparation competition held in Corpus Christi. Austin won 1st place in Mathematics, 1 st place in Number sense, 3rd place in Science and 2nd place in Calculator Apps. Austin's individual scores were even higher than a couple of the competing team total scores- wow. Austin works hard at everything he does and he does a lot. He has seminary in the morning, accelerated classes all day ( he is a straight student taking Pre-AP Chemistry, Pre-cal, etc.) football practice and then home for hours of homework not to mention Math team activities. Both Austin and Taylor work very hard and are exceptional students. Keep it up Austin and Taylor, the hard work will eventually pay off.

UPDATE: Flour Bluff ended their playoff hopes with a loss to GP 27 - 23. 5 turnovers 4 of which were in the red zone. One in the last few minutes on their 8 yd line with score 27 -21. A heartbreaker but a great game to the last second (also ending with an interception).

Joey's Graduation

We were able to go to Joey's graduation in Houston last weekend. I brought my brand new Nikon D80 Digital SLR with an 18 t0 135 mm zoom high tech super dooper camera for the event. However the battery was dead. I got one shot before it gave up. I wasn't worried because normally it can take 1 thousand shots due to the 8 gig mem card, but the battery was dead. Of course, it won't hold any pictures when the battery is dead. Did I mention the battery was dead? Well I can at least enjoy the photos that Holly and Joey (now on their blog) did take because their camera didn't have a dead battery, mine did. Note to self: purchase backup battery, keep on charger, take with camera to important family events.

Now that that's out of my system I can talk about the trip. It was great seeing the kids. The girls are adorable and very entertaining as you can see from Holly's blog. They seem to be growing up so fast especially now that we are so far away and can only see them every so many months. Cali is such a sweet little girl, always a ready smile. Ella and Aubrey are just little angels too. Graduation ceremonies are fairly long affairs but the girls took it all in stride, not a complaint from any of them.
The key note speaker was Les Brown and he was great, a bit like a preacher but very funny.
Afterwards we all went out to eat. Joey's parents and sister Niki was there too. It was great getting a chance to see everyone again. I wish I had a few photos to share but ..

A Long Line of Wonderful Mothers

Lots of guys talk about their mother-n- laws being difficult and sometimes interfering in their personal business. Sitcoms have been launched on the premise with comedians making a very good living talking about these strained relationships.
Fortunately I don't have that problem. In fact, I would say that Bobbie (my wife's mother) is a real saint and I mean it. She is a wonderful mother and grandmother and I have never known her to say an unkind thing about anyone, ever. My wife Patty is also a great mom and I know our children would all agree that they have many great memories of their mom spending time with them. I have also watched Holly our oldest daughter and first to start her own family with her children. She is following the footsteps of her mother and grandmother and has become another amazing mom in a long line of wonderful women. I feel so proud of her when I see her children calling her by her "new" name mom. A title really, bestowed by her children who love her and trust her. They have so much fun together.

I guess sometimes moms get caught up in the day to day routines and forget just how amazing they really are. So in case there is any doubt (we thought it was obvious) we think Holly is one of the three best moms in the world.

Tara's Birthday Party

Tuesday we had Tara's birthday party. Holly made the cake and it was delicious. The kids are always up for a party and in our large clan there is no shortage of birthdays to celebrate.

Unfortunately, Tara tripped on her apartment stairway the next day (her real birthday) on her way out to celebrate with her boyfriend and cut her knee.

Clean the wound, put a sterile dressing on it (don't blow on it) and bandage the dressing. Call mom if it still hurts, you'll feel better. Dad.

Visiting the Kids in McKinney

We drove up to the Dallas area this last week to visit Tara, Joey, Holly and the grandkids. It was a longer drive due to traffic jams and at one point we were stuck over an hour moving only 12 miles.
The traffic seems to get worse every trip and from now on we're taking alternate routes, it might be fun seeing different scenery anyway. We added a couple of LCD screens/DVD player and the trip was more fun for the boys who watched movies on the way. The only real distraction for the driver was the occasional giggling in the back seats .. by mom.

Monday we all went out to eat and celebrated Joey's completing school. It's been many years of hard work and late nights but he's managed to complete school and still meet so many other responsibilities. It is quite an accomplishment and even more so when you consider all they have done in such a short time. New homes , new jobs, new bosses, new babies, new wards, new friends.. heck I get stressed just thinking about it. We are truly amazed and very proud of them both. Our gift to Joey was a Koaloha Concert Ukulele, an instrument he had been wanting for some time. It was wonderful watching him play for his daughters and I imagine when they are older they'll remember their father singing and playing for them when they were little. They are both such wonderful parents. We love them all.

Austin Back in the Swing of Things

Austin has worked hard making a come back in sports after a complete ACL rupture requiring replacement surgery. It's been over a year of rehab and gradual return to full activity. The picture is of Austin in a game Saturday. He had several hits and in the previous game make a miracle diving catch while playing shortstop.

This last week our house was filled with girls big, small and tiny. It was more than a welcome change for Grandma (Patty) since she is usually over run with boys and baseball bats. Cali was the center of attention of course and her sisters are always there, ready with a hug and a kiss. They are all so sweet and get along so well.

Luckily, we had not removed all of the sand from where our pool once was and it was utilized; as a huge sand box for the girls to play in.

Tara also came down and brought one of her pet birds, named ... uh bird or something. Chloe the dog also came and is always a hit with the girls and everybody else.

1st Place UIL State Math Competition

Austin was one of a four student team representing Flour Bluff High School last weekend in the State UIL Mathematics competition. The team won 1st place in Number Sense, 3rd place in Math and 4th in Calculator tests. Austin and another student on the high school team are in 9th grade.
